Tatt av kvinnen

This will be my first movie review in deepak.dk. So lets start with a Norwegian movie.

I am no big fan of the movie channels – clarity or quality wise- that i get in Kerala. But..recently sifting through the usual mess of the reality shows, lose weight shows, super slicer(Wowie!!!) and AbKing pro informercials , I hear something very very familiar. Sounds with hot potatoe juggling in the mouth, familiar tone of words rising and falling. Well it is a movie in “Rosebowl” a westernish channel which shows some good movies- with substance. Recenty they are having a movie festival Prime A-Z and today it is “D” and “Dead Man Walking” is on the air. Yesterday it was “CastAway” and tomorrow it will be “Erin Brokovich”.

I was not able to place the language although i was 100% sure that it was Nordic. Either Danish or Norwegian, Since Swedish is very different to hear. A bit more musical. And finnish being totally different of all these.

I have seen a couple of Dansk movies while in Denmark, you can rent movies from the Bibiotek . Also i saw one in Jaman- the video rental service, Villa Paranoia. Most of the Dansk (or rather Nordic) movies are very close to life – as i saw it over there. You see all these characters in real life too :).  Well, if you see the Indian movies(Esp the so called Bollywood ones :)), they are totally set in some Fantasy land, with all that songs etc etc.It is like the life the people want to be.Although  Yeah,  the story of the non-mainstream Indian movies are  a lot different.

Coming back, i could find that the movie name is “Gone with the Woman” in English. I checked the wiki and got landed in “Tatt Av Kvinnen”. Looks like it was Norway’s nominee for the Oscar too.

Literal meaning of Tatt Av Kvinnen is “Taken by the Woman” (?). Kvinnen is “The Woman”. In Danish it is Kvinden, with D silent. I think Norwegian (Bokmal) is said as it is written compared to Danish(not too many silent stuff in there).

Synposis  of the movie as per IMDB is,

“A woman moves into a young man’s home and starts to run his life — a process that makes him fall hopelessly in love with her”

The protagonist is a  unnamed young man (mentioned just as HIM :) ). He is a quintessential scandic middle class guy, Not very very educated ,has a job , a coop apartment and living the normal socially secured beer drinking life. Now a girl (Marienne) moves in with him and his life starts changing. She is a little mean, and may be self contradictory at times since she is seen loud mouthed about the “Beauty of Silence”. The movie kind of reminded me of “Amelie”, actually HIM looks a lot like Nino in Amelie. HIM is trying to find the meaning of life and to find true love. Which is kind of same as the Amelie’s theme. Also there is a gist of Paris in the movie :).

I particularly loved a scene in the movie where Him gets fired from his job. He is given the usual drill in a conference room. “Yeah , times are tough”, “It is not that you have performed less”. “Well you get a 3 months salary”..etc etc. And the cheque travels along the circular conference table to his hands. :) (the shot angle is just superb at that point). Yeah that is deja vu. Now he gets out and tells Marienne that he lost the job.  Ah, Marienne is super happy and says lets go for a vacation. FERIE!!!!!!!!(HOLIDAYS!!!!),that is very Nordic!, people are not very concerned about losing the job at all!Later, they get in an NSB train while the boarding board on the platform says “Tog Til Europa”!.

Another scene worth mentioning is when Marienne gets back to him, after  a break up (When she cheated on him with  some Eagle watcher, Thor). Him asks “Too many Eagles , huh??”

Finally i think it was worth the hours spent in front of the idiot box – which is a rarity now a days. Little bit of comedy, Drama and Romance and a straight depiction of life makes this movie very special. 10/10 !! I would really love to get a DVD for this for sure!.
