Alborg: To Hirtshals on a windy day

had a little trip to Hirtshals in July 2008. Hirtshals is a small coastal town in north-west Danmark about 70 Kms from Alborg. It is part of Hjørring sub-kommune. It seems Hjørring was a kommune before, but lately all of the Nordjylland got unified in to one kommune centred at Alborg city. I went by train from Alborg. There is no direct train from Alborg to Hirtshals and you got to change the train at Hjørring to a Nordjyskejernebane Train which is a little different from the normal DSB train. The tickets you can take through to Hirtshals or better punch a KlippeKort at Alborg (cheaper).

So i started one early morning with my backpack and 2 KilppeKort i bought from Foetex the previous day, reached the station ,punched the Klippekorts at the platform machine and got in to the trian bound to Frederikshavn. Few stations, and we are in Hjørring and i get out – i think many people got out- and the blue regional connecting train to Hirtshals was waiting for us. Hirtshals is pretty near to Hjørring , and the regional train moves much much faster than the DSB train i think. Anyway another few stations and i was in Hirtshals.

Hirtshals is not a very big city, but rather a coastal town. It has the railway station and a Harbour very near by. Some cruise liners operate out of Hirtshals to Larvik which is in Norway.

I walked along the centrum. hmm .. looks just like Alborg. seems to have reduced a bit . Same brand shops etc etc . Later,I walked to the beach – very much peopleless save for 2 people. It was very very windy, i was kind of getting blown away by the force of the wind. The sands rise due to the wind and get in to your ears and nose .. pretty annoying indeed. :). I took a few photos and got back. The sea was not very violent, but not that calm as well. Well.. it is the first time i saw a proper Den Danske beach. The coast in Alborg is of the Fjord rather than proper sea.

Again to Hirtshals centrum. I saw a few curious vintage cars parked , one of them was really curious since it was a 3 wheel mod.Took some pictures of it and others, roamed around the centrum again and moved to the shopping area. Not many shops were open but i saw a BIG tilbud on one garment shop. I think it was a Jack’n'Jones shop or something. So i got in to the shop as the only customer.

Talking about the Den Danske Toej shoppen, i have bought clothes from, mostly they are pretty good and staffed with people who have an eye for fashion. Not that i always shop high fashion,i have bought from BILKA also!. I checked some Lee jeans of mix fabric and decided to buy it. Another note about Danske clothing is , there isn’t lot of color choice. Black, grey, white, various shades of it, finished. I also bought a black and white check shirt.

There is just one employee in the store , who met me at the counter. He appeared as if he had been trapped at this end of world place , that too in a garment store with more or less zero customers. May be it has its own busy day and this windy one is just not it.:) . I casually mention him of the weather – too windly huh? . He said Ja, but it was worse yesterday. Not a good time to visit etc. I asked about the cruise options to Norway. He told me about the Larvik cruise and gave me a couple of brochures. I paid up, said Hej Hej and got out.

Next .. feeling too hungry . i checked up the train timinings and the next train is no where in the immediete future. I found an IRMA near the station and got in. Yeah . the same super market. Bought a bread and a pack of Indisk grapes . It seemed to be cheaper than Alborg. Anyway i pay using by Dankort – huh .. Plastic money .. How easy to spend!

The Hirtshals Havn is visible from the station and i decided to go there. It looked similar to the Frederikshavn Port. Going through a lot of wooden corridors etc you reach the tourist welcome area with a Big counter and a lounge. The cruise brochures are displayed prominantly in the lounge. I got some brochures – they are mostly of Colorline cruises – and went back the railway station. A long wait for the train eating the grapes and bread. The wind was too much and a little chilly. And yes .. finally the Nordyskejernbane comes down to take me back to Alborg – retracing the path that i came to Hirtshals.

ps: too lazy to put the photographs now! :)

Alborg: Walk to Nibe : Part 1

Reading time: 7 – 12 minutes

am kind of fond of walking long distances. Means in the 10s of kilometers range or 2/3 hours continuous – not running end to end of the country! . In Bangalore i have tried walking from Majestic to Indiranagar/ IndiraNagar to Koramangala. MG road to Airport road via Indiranagar etc. Why IndiraNagar coming up as a common factor in all these walks?. Yeah i used to live there for some 3+  of 4 years of my Bangalorean existance. Pretty nice place, but i think now got temporaririly trashed by the Metro construction.

So why not try a long walk in Alborg. Well i did that on a weekend in 2007 oktober. It was another nice experience to see the landscape of Danmark in my own pace.  It was some 20+ Kms walk from Alborg to a nearby coastal town called Nibe in the Western side of Danmark. It is not  a proper coast but coastal to the LimsFjord which bifurcates NordJylland (Nordth Jutland) from the Jylland peninsula.

I had the route in mind, well i checked in google maps and the Danmark map. There are 2 ways one the NyNibeVej (New Nibe Road) which is some kind of busy high way- which obviously is not very safe for the pedestrians. I was living in ScheelsmindeVej in Alborg SydVest (South West) at the time. So the idea was to walk along HobroVej – Most of the road names in DK specifies where it leads to . Hobro is a place away from Alborg and Hobrovej will take you to Hobro, Ultimately :) – reach Skalborg which is a shopping mall area of Alborg where the Alborg Storcentre and BILKA is situated, turn right to NibeVej and walk straight. You will touch a few small towns (2/3) and finally reach the main road which leads to Nibe. And yes. At the main road, the NyNibeVej will meet the Nibevej. :). Then walk along to reach Nibe town, coast etc. Not very very intersting, but it is kind of a challenge.

first a few photos from Alborg.  :)

ScheelsmindeVej, Alborg SV

Another reason why i chose Nibevej to reach Nibe is, it has been marked as Margueriteruten in the Danmark  turist kort(Tourist map). Marguerit routes are  apparently some scenic routes in the Dansk country side. Any way it is marketing the Den Danske Turisme , i decided to check out what is that altogether. Margueriteruten are marked in the road signs by a brown daisy (i guess it is a daisy/ is it a marigold??)

First of the Kronas

So i started from Scheelsmindevej around 9AM and started by walk to Skalborg along the Hobrovej. I remember that it was rather cold in the 10-15c rance. Well . well .. that it  is pretty cold is pretty evident so as not to be mentioned but at that time i was just a month old in DK so was in the process of getting used to the weather. I got in to one of the Kiosks (Convenience store) in a gas station in Hobrovej and sampled the things. I decided to have some dark chocolates (that is another bad habit that you can get from DK, you get addicted to chocolate/gummies/icecreams/juices and lots of it are available for cheap (comparitive) prices almost everywhere) and some hot coffee to get some Varme. Took the chocolates and went to the counter and asked for the coffee. The counter boy tells me , that is 15Kr per cup – do i still wanna have it?. I say Ja!.

Got out of the Kiosk and walked to Skalborg where i turned to the right to Nibevej.

2 Zoner KippeKort . Bus card used in Nordjylland transport system.

The 2nd pic above is a 2 Zoner NT “KlippeKort” transport card which is used in the Nordjylland transport system. Trains and busses alike. You punch  the Kort in a machine for the number of zones you wish to travel.Almost all of Alborg is in Zone1/2 (including the Airport) and you get this in any store :).

Coming back, the Nibevej appeared to be rather straight and there was a pedestrian and cycle trail running along the road for a while. Later it all coalesced it to a single straight straight road. The land scape of the region is majestic but a lot recurring (shh..if not a little boring). Long winding meadows and fields with little houses – which look like like doll houses- scattered in between.

I passed a small town called Frejlev after walking a long distance from Skalborg. It looked like a minature version of Alborg with a small centrum,a church and a convenience store (i think it was a SPAR). I moved on and reached another town called Stor Restrup. If you classify the place names in DK, the ones ending with “up” are very common. Just look at the maps. The copenhagen airport is called Kastrup. Another examples near to Alborg will be Klarup, Gistrup etc etc. Everyday i used to ride the 2K bus to Gistrup :). Huh .. digressing again!! back! . Store Restrup , Store means BIG. :). So it is likely that there is a Restrup as well. I passed a curious wood works factory sign in Restrup.

Walk more and more  and reached another small town called Sønderholm. There i rested in the bustop for a while and had chocos and juice. Sønderholm, It kind of means “Island in the South”. Holm is Island.  Holm is also a surname in some Danish families. Some danish surnames are related to the geography of the place where the family originated. A Holm’s family might have originated in an Island. There there are the Dahls. Dahl or Dale means “Valley” in Danish. So it is some family that lived near a valley.

I started from Sønderholm after sometime ( i just checked the bustimings also), walked and walked to reach a right turn which brought me to Ny Nibe Vej.

Ny Nibe Vej is  a busy highway. There ain’t many houses along the road but it is marked by large fields , meadows with horses and … Windmills. I saw a few little horses in a pen and went to them. They looked friendly. I am not very used to horses and it is the first time i am this (arm’s length) away from one. There was  a little poney whose mum was also pretty little and in another pen there was a majestic black Stallion. I took some photos and continued to Nibe.

ps: for some reason i am not able to post pics from facebook after the upgrade to WP2.8.. sigh…

Using Gimp!

March 30th, 2008 admin No comments

Reading time: 1 – 2 minutes

This is one best tutorial collection if you like painting on the PC. Its all photoshop but can equally apply to Gimp. Poor mans photoshop (If it can be called that way!)

I created one glassy (??) sphere on gimp following the tutorials

A lots of things are missing , i think the tut seems to be a bit complex to follow .. there has to be something done in the bottom as well (some gradient magic which can give the perfect glassy sphere effect) ..I hope to improve soon..some aspects are ugly! . better luck next time

As for the tutorials link, most of the paintings are done using the Aiptek graphics tablet. Its not at all possible using a mouse (Laptop touchpad?? NO NO .. RSI is a very bad thing to get!) .. May be i’ll get hold of one of them its almost 500DKK at edbpriser. Its supposed to work in Linux as per this link

Playing with Inkscape now a days for a bit of graphics creation .. thanks to the screencast tutorials at youtube it was pretty easy to do

For the uninitialized , Inkscape is a vector graphics editor that comes with most of the linux distributions and it can be used to create cool logos, buttons etc yes, the kind of web2.0 eyecandy stuff. This again shows the power of free and opensource software. Creativity should be free since not all creative mind may be rich :)

To install Inkscape in Ubuntu, its

sudo apt-get install inkscape

conscious and curious

this is one bit map i created using inkscape. well the text is a bit enigmatic but something great! gradients can give very nice reflective effects :) its too girlie pink , but the other color i liked is grey which might represent my current state of mind :)

Guess i would never have touched this if i were in india, the magic of loneliness . Thanks to SM for asking me to so some image editing!
